Based on ARM Cortex-A8 processor, AM335x microprocessor has been enhanced in image processing, graphics processing, peripherals and industrial interface options such as EtherCAT and PROFIBUS. The device supports advanced operating system (HLOS). The processors SDK Linux® and TI-RTOS are available from Texas Instruments for free.

Microprocessor Unit (MPU) subsystem is based on ARM Cortex-A8 processor, and PowerVR SGX™ graphics accelerator subsystem provides 3D graphics acceleration function to support display and game special effects.

Programmable real-time unit subsystem and industrial communication subsystem (PRU-ICSS) are independent from the ARM core, allowing independent operation and timing to achieve higher efficiency and flexibility. PRU-ICSS supports additional peripheral interfaces and real-time protocols such as EtherCAT, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, PROFIBUS, Ethernet POWERLINK, and Sercos. In addition, with the programmable characteristics of PRU-ICSS and its access rights to pins, events and all system-on-a-chip (SoC) resources, the subsystem can flexibly realize fast real-time response, dedicated data processing operations and customized peripheral interfaces, and reduce the task load of other processor cores of SoC.
