According to a report by Taiwan's Economic Daily, AMD has received approval to establish its first Asian research and development (R&D) center in Taiwan. The total approved budget for the project is NT$8.64 billion, with the Taiwanese government subsidizing 30% of the cost.
The report cites Qiu Qiuhui, head of the Technology Department under Taiwan's economic authorities, who stated that AMD's GPU and AI platform adopts an open architecture. This initiative has secured participation from 33 Taiwanese manufacturers in the R&D efforts. The project is expected to drive new investments of NT$15 billion and annually train over 1,000 AI professionals.
AMD's "A+ Global Research and Innovation Partnership Program" aims to develop cutting-edge AI software and hardware technologies. As part of the program, AMD has pledged to bring in 50% of its talent from abroad. The official approval list for this initiative was recently announced.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs presented three conditions to AMD for the project's approval:
Introduction of Advanced Technologies: AMD is required to bring in key advanced technologies that will benefit Taiwan's technological landscape.
International Talent Recruitment: The company must recruit 50% of its workforce from international talent. This effort will be supported by new special programs from the Ministry of Education, which will offer scholarships and grants to help cultivate R&D talent.
Increased Local Component Production: AMD has committed to increasing the local sourcing of components to help establish a robust supply chain in Taiwan.
The establishment of AMD's R&D center in Taiwan is strategically significant, as it positions Taiwan as a critical hub for technological innovation and development in Asia. By fostering collaboration between AMD and local companies, the initiative aims to strengthen Taiwan’s role in the global AI and semiconductor industries.
The project's focus on AI and GPU technology development aligns with the growing demand for advanced computing solutions across various industries. By nurturing local talent and integrating international expertise, AMD's new R&D center is poised to contribute significantly to Taiwan’s economic growth and technological advancement.
Overall, the partnership between AMD and Taiwan reflects a shared commitment to innovation and the development of next-generation technologies, promising a bright future for both AMD and the Taiwanese tech sector.
