Recently, Typhoon Khanun struck Taiwan, causing significant economic damage to the region. However, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), a global leader in chip manufacturing, reported that its 2nm manufacturing facilities remained unaffected by the storm. This news brings some relief to the industry.
TSMC is currently constructing two 2nm facilities in Taiwan, located in Zhuke Baoshan and Kaohsiung Nanzi Industrial Park. The construction of the Zhuke Baoshan plant has been completed and has entered the trial production stage. This plant is considered crucial for TSMC’s future development and is expected to produce the A19 or A20 chips for Apple’s next-generation iPhones. Previously, Apple COO Jeff Williams visited Taiwan to ensure the supply of the first batch of 2nm chips, highlighting the importance of the Zhuke Baoshan plant in Apple’s supply chain.
Construction of TSMC’s 2nm wafer plant in Kaohsiung is also progressing smoothly, with completion expected sometime in 2025. Although Typhoon Khanun struck Taiwan, water and electricity supplies remained unaffected. In Kaohsiung, while some construction facility fences were damaged, repairs have been completed. During the typhoon, the drainage system and detention basin in the area functioned normally, preventing flooding and ensuring that the construction of TSMC’s Kaohsiung P1 and P2 plants was not impacted. After construction safety checks and environmental cleanup on July 28, construction work resumed on July 29.
The developers of the Nanzi Industrial Park stated that the park’s drainage system has a designed capacity of 54,000 cubic meters, with a safety factor of 1.49, exceeding the standard requirement of 1.2. This design ensures that the facility’s construction does not affect the area’s drainage flow and does not add any burden to downstream drainage. The design effectively protected the facilities during the typhoon.
In the context of growing global demand for high-performance chips, the construction of TSMC’s 2nm plants is crucial for maintaining its competitiveness in the international market. Despite the challenges posed by Typhoon Khanun, TSMC’s steady progress demonstrates its resilience and ability to handle unexpected events. This not only helps meet future customer demands but also strengthens Taiwan’s position in the global semiconductor industry.
